Vocal Practices FAQ’s
COVID: All in person students must be fully vaccinated with CDC recommended boosters for in person vocal study.
Do I need prior experience to study with April Hall: Yes. You do not need to be a professional singer, however, you do need prior vocal experience. I do not teach first time vocal students. Why not? Teaching someone who has never sang in their life, or only casually around the house etc, is VERY different than teaching someone who has experience, and/or has performed in public. And even though many times, I still cover basic vocal principles in initial lessons, it’s a lesson progression that is going to quickly implore medium to advanced techniques and concepts, built on the practice motivation and promise of live performance. Although vocal work is fun, and I love spending time with my students, I really believe in encouraging brand new students to study with a teacher who specialize in beginners. My practice is for people who plan on performing in public or who already are. I teach high school age, college age, and professional musicians. I often am asked for recommendations for a begining teacher for both younger children and novice adults, sadly the great teacher that I used to send students too, has moved out of the New England area, and does not offer online lessons. I will update this section, if I should find a quality beginner instructor I can recommend.
What qualifies as prior experience: Prior experience would be prior vocal lessons and or some performing experience such as high school theater or community productions, choirs, bands, recording projects.
Are there age requirements: Yes. April only accepts students that are 15 years of age or older. The only exceptions being younger vocalist who are already working in a professional capacity.

The first 30 minutes of the lesson is generally spent on technique and warming up, and the second 30 minutes working on actual material on a microphone. I will often alternate, 60 minute full technical lessons, and 60 minute performance material lessons, depending on the needs of the student and their goals.
What digital video platforms do you offer for online lessons: I teach online lessons with Zoom, FaceTime and Skype. Zoom being the preferred platform, as the sound quality is superior to the other two. However, I teach frequently on all three platforms.
Do I need any special equipment for online lessons: No (with the exception of headphones). All you need is a device that has the ability to video conference such as an iPhone (these work better than some computers!), desktop, laptop, iPad etc. You will most likely want some sort of headphones, plug in or bluetooth, so that you can hear better. For microphone work, please bring which ever microphone you use for your performances. If you do not own a microphone, I will provide one for you, for our lessons.
